The Transformer, the Destroyer, Mahadev, Bholenath – Lord Shiva the Supreme power and is addressed by several names. Lord Shiva along with Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu are the three main energies behind the formation of the Universe. There are several temples of Lord Shiva in India but below are few of his most popular historical temples.

Kedarnath Temple
The Kedarnath Jyotirlinga temple is one of the holiest Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Uttarakhand. It is considered as the holiest pilgrimages of the Hindu and is situated at the starting of the Mandakini River in the Garhwal Himalayan Range. It is not accessible by road and has a 14 km trek from Gaurikund. The temple is one of the four major places known as the Chota Char Dham. The temple is open from end of April to Kartik Purnima in October. It is closed during the winter months due to extreme weather conditions and the Lord is brought down to Ukhimath where are rituals are carried out as usual.

Baidyanath Jyotirlinga
Baidyanath dham is also one of the most sacred abodes of Shiva.It is considered as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas located in Deoghar in Jharkhand.The shrine is very famous as thousands of people offer holy water from river Ganges to Lord Shiva during the month of Shravan i.e. from mid-July to mid-August.Baidyanath Dham also known as Baba Dham has 22 temples in the temple complex. Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is located in the oldest city of Banaras in Uttar Pradesh. Kashi, Banaras and now called Varanasi is the holiest city of India and dedicated to Lord Vishwanath. Situated on the banks of the holy river Ganga, it is the most sacred place for Hindus and is believed that every Hindu should visit at least once in his lifetime. It is believed that one who breathes his last in Kashi get liberated from the cycle of birth and rebirth.Here the Arti is held five times in a day and the evening Aarti is called Ganga Aarti held at the Ghat.

Rameshwaram is a religious town located on the Pamban Island in the state of Tamil Nadu on the Eastern coast. The Rameshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered as one of the most sacred shrines of Hindus. Rameshwara means Lord Rama and is one of the incarnations of Hindu god Vishnu and is believed to have prayed to Shiva here. It is believed that the idol of Lord Shiva was brought from Kailash by Hanuman.
Somnath Temple
The historical temple of Somnath is located on the Western Coast of Gujarat is considered as the most significant Jyotirlinga temples in India and gains prestigious position among the Hindus. The temple is dedicated to Someshwara, Lord Shiva with moon on his head.The temple is a witness to several historical incidents and has been ruined by foreign invaders several times. The present day structure is built in 1947 in the Chalukya style of architecture. Lakhs of devotees visit this temple and consider themselves to be blessed after visiting the temple.

Originally there were believed to be 64 Jyotirlingas but 12 of them are considered to be the most auspicious and holy. As per the Hindu mythologies, visiting Jyotirlingas is a pilgrimage that wades off all the sins and makes the soul pure.
